1. Machines (2009)
Concept: Human uses a machine. Machine uses human. Two different identities become to be same each other through all the same mechanical process in industry world. Both of them are combined together in one robotic, identical, meaningless, dry medium without any creativity or humanism. This commonly happens in our society nowadays and it affects to the lack of warm heart or creative investigation to human society. This situation is sometimes funny but makes us sad and deeply considerate our future. What would be the difference between human-machine and machine-oriented human? What would be the solution to escape isolation of humanism and keep the high-technology?
This piece explores the questions by showing what happens in a wooden shop. Human starts to work on making some stuffs with all kinds of machines there. Human operates the machines and keep working on the same pattern of making steel work. It creates various machine sounds and noises during the process. As time goes by, human gets lost one's own creative thought and idea, and just focus on repeating the same machine work without any change. Human evolves to machine. Machine gets power and manages human. The brains of machine and human gets blurry. The meaningless activity keeps going on and finally human is gone and machine remains.
2. Heartbeats (2009)
Concept: The body is the closest sound environment to human. One can feel the body by listening its inner sound. Especially when we feel nervous, anxious and face danger moment, heartbeat changes differently since human's heartbeat is various depending on physical and mental situation. This project simulates the human heartbeat and how it is reacted by experiences and environmental changes, especially in scary dream or by chasing from unknown human or creature in nightmare. Human can feel how heart beats dramatically and sensitively change while feeling dangerous. This piece explores one's heartbeat during the nightmare at night time.
This piece starts from the normal heartbeat, but gets dynamic and speedy with fear and anxiety of inner mind. Haunted piano and atmosphere FX effects add the strong anxiety of human in nightmare. Heartbeat gets fast and irregular, and at the end of this piece, it's going to climax, and finally finishing slowly. Eventually it represents about the short story that a patient experiences in hospital, who has unknown mental problem during a scary dream at the end of his or her life....
3. Lullaby (2009)
Concept: When I was a child, my mother always used to sing lullabies before I go to sleep. I fell into sleep slowly and peacefully while listening to her soft humming. Her gentle voice resonated deep inside my ears, heart and even in my dream. It was such a magical moment in my life and I believe that this is something most of people must have experienced it in their childhood. This sound piece illustrates the memory of my mother's lullaby through using repetitive and resonated calm human voice.
4. RadioAD (2009)
Concept: This sound piece explores the voice composition collected from radio stations' advertisements. The advertisements repeat the information as many times as possible in order to make people remember the product or service. The narration's ridiculous repetition is silly and makes me uncomfortable. The deconstruction and recomposition of human voices in this project highlights the way these advertisements repeat certain phrases and patterns.
