"Hello World" -- a greeting and a challenge to the future. Avant-garde posturing is so last century. The tools are ready, the media are robust, the audience is waiting. Waiting to see, to listen, to reflect, to engage, to interact, to shout.

Design Media Art - three words that contain a multitude. Millennial Walt Whitmans with CNC routers, Arduino controllers, and mega-pixel cameras. The tech is ubiquitous but the quest is for meaning. Depth is the new black.

Two cones converge. The first narrows to a point, a thesis show that is the culmination of two years of work in the academy. The second cone, inverted, expands from there to an ever-wider set of media, venues, audiences, and meanings. This exhibition invites a dialogue, a conversation about the next stage -- "Hello World."

Our opening season at Inspace has paid homage to the work of Charles Darwin, starting at the beginning, with the evolution of complex behavior in lifeforms and ending by examining how, 3.4 billion years later we are here, in an informatic age.

We live with the new realities made possible by the evolution of technologies that process information. These things that make us smart pervade modern culture and are changing the way we experience ourselves, each other, our communities and our planet - transforming the story of what it is to be human.

From the rise of intelligence in humans through the evolution of the human brain, the exhibition ‘Are We Human?’ explores the relationship between the environment and intelligent life and ends with an examination of human invention in the age of informatics.

In the work ‘One’ by Erick Oh, Yoon Chung Han, Gautam Rangan & Mubbasir Kapadia, you can assume the role of a god. The microcosm evolving before your eyes reflects and subverts the natural systems in which we live. The work listens and responds to your actions, producing complex and intricate responses.
